Egyptian Cat Eye

I had the pleasure of working with DJ Shaw on The Bennett Witch Chronicles, and I thought it would be fun to toss things up with her here. We squeezed in some time to talk about her busy life and her contribution to the Bonnie stories.

For those readers who are not familiar with you, tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a 39 yr old mom of five children (ages 15, 13, 9 & 7), one boy and four girls. The last two are twins and quite the handful lol. I have been writing since I was 10 years old but seriously writing since I was about 17. I love to live in the worlds of my characters, if only while I’m writing. But when I’m not writing I am mostly a mother. Well that isn’t entirely true lol I am also a caregiver. I have been a caregiver for almost 10 years now though I take care of my own mother as best I can now. I love to read, draw (when I get the urge lol) and color. I color all kinds of things for my little mobsters 😉

Tell us about your Bonnie book. How did you come up with the idea for the story?

I have always wanted to visit Egypt and have done so much research on the place that I felt it would make a great area to have Bonnie visit. I wanted to work on a mythos that hasn’t really been done before, which is kind of my writing MO. I wasn’t sure where the book was going to go, at first, but I really enjoyed writing it J I knew that if I combined to mythos in one book it could go one of two ways; either really bad, or really, really good. My editor believes that I did a fantastic job of combining Egyptian Mythology with Japanese Folklore and I think I did too!

What was the most fun part about writing this book?

Putting myself in Bonnie’s shoes. I tried to write my book in the third person point of view but found it was much easier to write if I became Bonnie.

What did you like or dislike about working on a collaborative series?

I love working on collaborative series. It helps me meet other authors interested in the same genres as I am. It is also a really good way to establish a connection with like-minded authors.

Tell us about some of your other titles.

Right now I am currently between publishing companies but I am working on republishing my Pink Rhinestone Tiara series (Books 1, Blood Lust, & 2, Blood Lost, as well as the novella that brings books 2 & 3 together, A Break from the Blood), my YA book Apocalyptic Records, my horror shorts, Phegru’s Revenge & Things in the Mirror as well as publishing a few other pieces I have been holding onto.

What do you think is the most difficult part of writing in general? What’s the most fun?

The most difficult part of writing is when life gets in the way and makes it almost impossible for me to write. Oh yes and the blurbs. I have always hated writing the blurbs for my pieces ! The most fun is getting to write about new worlds and learning about the characters I have come up with 😉

Do you draw inspiration from other media (movies, tv, video games, music, etc?)

Sometimes. Music is the media I lean to but there have been times that I have been so disappointed with a horror movie that I have found a way to spin new life into something that should have been scary in the first place 😉

If you had a chance to make any fictional character real, who would it be and why?

Hmmm. I have to think about this one. I believe I would love to meet Jenks from Kim Harrison’s Rachel Morgan series because he is such a fun character

What are some of your favorite books or movies?

My all-time favorite genre is horror, which covers most things but my favorite movie is Labyrinth.

What kind of stories would you like to see more of?

More mythologies that aren’t really written about much. And new animal shifters. Maybe some gargoyle books.

Over the last year or so, what has writing taught you about yourself?

It has taught me how to be more patient. That may seem like a weird thing to say but I am not really a patient person.

Other than your Bonnie Bennett book, what else do you have coming out soon?

Nothing yet, other than the books I plan to republish. I’m rewriting my first novel, Wiccan Lies, but I have no idea when that will be ready to be published.
